23th Congress of the International Association of Individual Psychology
POWER AND CULTURAL LIVING
Torino, Italy, May 26-29, 2005
Organized by: S.I.P.I. – Società Italiana di Psicologia Individuale Istituto di Psicologia Individuale A. Adler di Torino
S.A.I.G.A. – Società Adleriana Italiana Gruppi e Analisi
The issue of power has a long history in Individual Psychology. It relates to a variety of cultural dimensions and to the lives of individuals. Power has been chosen as the main theme of the Congress to develope a theoretical, methodological and practical exploration of the Science of Life and the Science of Living. Power plays a significant role in all cultures and is a creative strength in institutions and human relations. Power may be positively related to the enhancement of self – confidence and self – esteem, but may, as well, be a destructive force as an expression of the will to acquire power for its own sake. At a bio-psycho-social level power and cultural dynamics have different functions: compensation of inferiority feelings, reference to social roles and the shaping of personal modes of communication.
The interaction of power and culture, and the culture of power, can facilitate cooperation and social feeling and not a power culture. The theme of the Congress will serve to raise these and related questions and issues.
In line with the theme of the Congress, the Organizers have programmed the event around various areas such as
- Meanings of power in different cultures
- Power, social interest and fictional finalism
- Power and multimedia communication
- Power-styles and Life-styles
- Further…
to encourage discussion and both practical and theoretical experience sharing between Adlerian practitioners. In addition, for the first time, the Congress will include poster sessions and video presentations. The video sessions might present practical projects inspired by Individual Psychology.
The 23rd Congress of the International Association of Individual Psychology will take place in Torino, Italy. Torino is a city with a special welcome offering culture, tradition, monuments and museums and it is also known world-wide for its manufacturing and advanced technology industry.
